Shanghai seeks to boost wider use of IT

Shanghai is drafting local policies, expected to be ready by the end of this year, to encourage the wider use of all kinds of information technology, according to the Shanghai Commission of Economy and Information Technology yesterday.

In a first of its kind in the city, Shanghai will hold a festival to encourage the consumption of information, which embraces e-commerce, telecommunications services, online and offline services, on Sunday. Visitors will be able to get online coupons and free mobile Internet data traffic from China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telelcom.

In 2012, the revenue of Shanghai’s e-commerce industry hit 781.5 billion yuan (US$128.2 billion), up 41 percent year on year, according to the Shanghai E-commerce Association.

“The e-commerce trade volume has grown rapidly in recent years, thanks to B2B (business to business), booming online shops and cyber tourism service providers,” said Zhang Chenghe, secretary-general of the association.

Shanghai now has 3.2 million broadband users, covering 60 percent of local families. More than 18,000 public places have Wi-Fi coverage, including many free iShanghai Wi-Fi services.

By the end of this year, the next-generation 4G network will cover the Outer Ring Road area, China Mobile’s Shanghai branch said yesterday.

By 2015, China’s information consumption will hit 3.2 trillion yuan, up 20 percent annually, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology has said.
