Shanghai to be Dell R&D hub in China

DELL Inc yesterday said Shanghai will become its sole research and development center in China, the second-biggest market for the United States-based personal computer giant.

Its Shanghai-based research center, which employs more than 1,000 employees, is Dell's No. 2 research center in the world after the US, according to Amit Midha, president of Dell China.

"Shanghai is the center of research (for Dell China), and it won't change," Midha said in Shanghai yesterday.

He added that Dell will increase investment and continue to develop the local center to meet the growing Chinese and Asian markets.

Dell announced on Thursday that it would spend US$100 billion in China over the next 10 years. It will use the funds to open its second major operations center in the country in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. It will also expand the operations center in Xiamen, Fujian Province. The investment also supports R&D in Shanghai and an international service center in Dalian, Liaoning Province.

Hewlett-Packard Inc, the world's No. 1 PC maker, has an operations center in Chongqing.

International Data Corp sees PC sales in west China to grow 21 percent annually until 2014.
