Shanghai’s Internet speed tops in nation in 2013

SHANGHAI’S Internet speed, which was accused of being "fake broadband" several years ago because of low speeds, ranked the No. 1 nationwide in 2013, a top Internet service provider said today.

The average speed in Shanghai hit 5.4 megabits per second (MB/s) last year, followed by Beijing's 4.17 MB/s and Fujian Province's 3.93 MB/s in a national Internet ranking list, according to ChinaCache.

Nasdaq-listed ChinaCache offers content delivery network services in 120 cities in China with 12,000 services, which company officials said gives it reliable data on real Internet speeds in the country.

"I love the feeling of a fast broadband network," said Li Kai, a local IT engineer living in Xujiahui, who subscribes to China Telecom's package of 100 Mbps (megabytes per second). "I can download a film in minutes and a song in seconds."

Many local residents including Li watch online video directly on TV through set-top boxes and improved Internet speeds, with a peak speed up to 10 MB/s.

"It's a new lifestyle. I can watch TV anytime I want," Li added.

In 2010, a Beijing-based research firm said Shanghai had the nation's slowest broadband network, which it called a "fake broadband" service.

Since then, China Telecom’s Shanghai branch has invested heavily in upgrading the local network. It now offers a package of up to 100 Mbps, 10 to 25 times faster than three years ago.

Nationally speaking, China's Internet speed reached 3.54 MB/s in 2013, 33.2 percent faster than a year ago, according to CacheChina.

The rapid growth in Internet speed came from a national campaign called Broadband China and the surging demand for Internet services, especially mobile Internet, industry insiders said.

By 2020, China's average broadband bandwidth is expected to jump to 20 Mbps compared with about 4 Mbps in 2012, according to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
