Shanghai's culture industry flourishes
SHANGHAI'S culture and innovation industry expanded a robust 16.9 percent annually in 2011 despite a slowdown in the city's general economic development.
The output of the industry, which covers IT and consulting services, new media, design and movie production, totaled 642.9 billion yuan last year, the city's statistics bureau said yesterday.
City officials pointed out that vigorous expansion was seen in the Internet audio and visual product sector as well as the engineering design segment last year. The online entertainment sector grew by seven times in across-border trade volume last year while the output from the engineering design industry jumped by 37.6 percent, officials said.
The US, Japan, Hong Kong and Taiwan remained Shanghai's biggest overseas culture and innovation partners at the end of last year.
The total imports and exports of the industry last year were US$16.62 billion, up an annual 10.9 percent.
Shanghai intends to update laws and local policies to tighten protection of patent rights, which are critical to the success of the industry, Zong Ming, a city government official, said in a news conference yesterday.
