Shanghai's download speed still lags HK
THE Internet download speed of Shanghai ranked 14th among Chinese mainland cities - still only one-third of that of Hong Kong.
Shanghai's Internet speed is fastest among the big mainland cities, including Beijing and Nanjing, the country's top Internet download tool provider, Xunlei, said yesterday. Shenzhen-based Xunlei has more than 400 million users in China.
By the end of last year, the download speed of Shanghai was 1,044 kilobits per second (kbps), ranking 14th on the mainland. Xiangfan in Hubei Province was top with a download speed of 1,742 kbps.
But Shanghai's speed was far higher than Nanjing's 831 kbps and Beijing's 690 kbps, according to Xunlei.
The mainland's average speed was 646 kbps by the end of last year, only one-fifth of Hong Kong's 3,434 kbps.
The big cities have limited download speed because it would be very costly for them to improve it, industry sources said.
According to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, China plans to upgrade broadband networks in urban regions to 20 megabytes per second by 2015, which provides a download speed of about 2,500 kbps, which is about four times the current average.
