Shoppers prepare for online Single’s Day frenzy

CHINESE online shoppers are preparing for all kinds of sales ahead of tomorrow’s annual "Single's Day" shopping spree.

According to an online survey by CTR, 82 percent of respondents said they have a budget for this year's shopping spree.

A total of 24 percent of 5,584 respondents said their budget ranged between 501 yuan and 1,000 yuan while 19.6 percent said they would limit spending to 301 yuan to 500 yuan.

Alibaba's Taobao and Tmall still remain the favorite sites among online shoppers as CTR's research showed 93 percent of respondents will buy from the two sites while only 35 percent intend to spend their cash at JD.com. Another 10 percent said they would use home appliance retailer Suning's online unit. The survey noted that some shoppers would make purchases on more than one website.

As much as 74 percent of online shoppers said they plan to buy clothes and apparel while the second most popular category was shoes and hats.

“As a shopping holiday that was originally created in the online sphere, we still think the impact remains limited for daily necessities or in terms of impulse spending,” said Liu Xiaobin, vice president of Nielsen China.
