Sina Corp splits into two to focus on mobile business
SINA Corp, the operator of China's most popular microblogging site Weibo.com, said today it will split its business into two divisions and focus on mobile Internet strategy in the coming year.
Sina said it will let one unit to focus on microblog-related businesses and the other to take charge of web portal operations. Each will be responsible of their own technology and products.
Vice President Wang Gaofei will become the general manager of the microblogging business unit and report to Sina's chief executive officer Charles Chao.
Chief Operation Officer Du Hong will oversee the web portal unit. Chao himself will concentrate on the microblogging unit.
Chao said in an open letter to employees yesterday that the business restructuring means the company will focus on mobile Internet products to deal with the shift from desktop computers to smart phones.
Its wireless Internet unit will become a new department under the microblogging units.
