Sina joins UnionPay to boost services
Sina Corp, operator of China’s most popular microblogging service Weibo, said yesterday it has linked up with China UnionPay’s online settlement platform so that more card owners can pay for value-added services on its platform.
Sina is expected to accelerate diversification of online payment services by connecting with third party companies such as game developers to offer a wider service for Weibo users under a framework agreement it signed with UnionPay, the country’s sole bankcard transaction company.
Sina Weibo earlier this month allied with Alipay, the payment service linked with China’s largest e-commerce company Alibaba Group, as it seeks online payment revenue via the popular payment service.
The deal was a follow-up after Alibaba paid US$586 million for 18 percent of Sina Weibo last year.
