Site to expand video stable on mobile phones

More users are watching videos online on their mobile phones instead of computers and China’s No. 1 online video website Youku Tudou is cementing its multi-screen strategy embracing TV and especially mobile devices.

The website will expand its quality content from overseas publishers in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan, Britain and the United States in 2014. It also plans to invest 300 million yuan (US$48.8 million) on self-produced online dramas, according to Victor Koo, Youku Tudou’s chief executive.

“Multi-screen and mutli-source contents have become (an) irresistible trend for the whole online video industry,” said Koo at the weekend in Shanghai. “We have to seize the opportunity.”

Besides mobile devices, Internet-featured TV will be a hot prospect in future, according to the company.

To meet users’ rising demand, Youku Tudou will boost overseas content by  introducing 100 new US and British TV series in 2014, launch 700 hours of new Hong Kong videos in cooperation with TVB and 800 hours worth of new Taiwan-developed dramas.
