Smart phone makers to roll out 4G models next year

MORE than 10 handset models that support home-grown 4G technology will debut next year and more than 100 4G models are expected to be seen on the domestic market in 2014, including brands of ZTE, Huawei and perhaps iPhone, China Mobile said today.

All these models will support China's TD-LTE (time-division long-term evolution) technology, a 4G standard adopted by China Mobile, the world's biggest mobile carrier with more than 700 million users.

China Mobile is now testing its 4G network in 13 cities including Beijing, Hangzhou and Shanghai ahead of next year's 4G service launch.

Lack of enough 4G handset models is the biggest bottleneck in promoting the next-generation mobile network which runs at speeds 10 to 20 times faster than the current 3G network.

ZTE will unveil a TD-LTE phone by the end of this year, featuring a 4.3-inch screen and a dual-core chip, according to the Shenzhen-based company.

Apple also plans to roll out a TD-LTE-compatible iPhone but no details are available, said Li Zhengmao, China Mobile's vice president.
