Smartphone sales on mainland fall
SMARTPHONE sales in the Chinese mainland dipped 0.7 percent in the second quarter from a year ago but they are set to rebound with new models likely to launch in the second half, research firm IDC said yesterday.
In the April-June period, domestic smartphone sales reached 111 million units because of fewer new models released in the quarter and on weak replacement demand, said IDC, or International Data Corp, a US-based research firm.
The market is, however, expected to rebound with the debut of new iPhone and Samsung flagship models boasting advanced technologies for the screen and artificial intelligence, analysts said.
Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, Xiaomi and Apple were the top five models on the mainland in the second quarter. Of the top five, Apple was the only player whose sales fell, said IDC.
Huawei led the market with 21 percent share in the quarter, followed by Oppo’s 17.9 percent, Vivo’s 14.4 percent, Xiaomi’s 14.2 percent, and Apple’s 8 percent, IDC said. Apple’s market share dropped 1.7 percentage points in the quarter.
During the quarter, Apple’s revenue on the mainland jumped 10 percent from a year ago to US$8 billion, according to its latest fiscal report.
