Smartphone security at your fingertip
ULTRASONIC wave technology will improve fingerprint recognition features on smartphones, and more advanced security algorithms are expected to help guard against spoof threats and protect mobile payments.
More than 1.3 billion smartphones are expected to feature fingerprint recognition by 2020, compared with 800 million now.
Vivo, one of the top-three Chinese smartphone vendors, displayed its next-generation fingerprint recognition sensor with ultrasonic wave able to penetrate different materials at its booth during the Mobile World Congress Shanghai.
The system uses ultrasonic waves to read the a fingerprint and means it can use any surface of the phone, eliminating the need for a dedicated sensor.
It offers smartphone manufacturers flexibility in design and better protection against water, dirt and light distortions.
The new fingerprint technology was developed by Qualcomm. Vivo will be the first Chinese manufacturer to adopt the technology, ahead of Apple’s next-generation iPhone.
Swedish-based Precise Biometrics also launched new liveness detection software for fingerprint recognition, which offers users “trustworthy and secure” biometric authentication, said the company’s Hakan Persson.
About 60 percent of all financial transactions are expected to be performed by fingerprint sensors in mobile devices within the next several years. But identity theft and spoofing pose a real threat.
The company’s software will be integrated in 180 models from 40 brands including Huawei, Oppo, Vivo and Xiaomi, and will be available in the third quarter.
