Smartphone spread a boon to game developers

MOBILE games, especially multi-player online games, will bring developers considerable income in starting next year, thanks to popularity of low-cost smartphones and surging demand, Shanghai Daily learned at a mobile Internet forum yesterday.
Mobile game developers like WiStone and XD.com now are earning from tens of thousands yuan up to 100 million yuan (US$15.9 million) a year. And more companies are cashing in the booming business, industry officials told the China Mobile Internet Industry Investment Forum held yesterday in Beijing.
Investment in the mobile Internet industry remained stable in the first half despite dwindling investment in sectors like construction, education and consumer-related sectors, said research firm Zero2IPO.
Investment in China's mobile Internet industry will continue to grow until 2014 or 2015, Zero2IPO said, noting that investment so far this year topped US$378 million, the same as a year ago. Last year's total was US$666 million.
Shanghai's Jiading District plans to increase its special fund for business startups from 500 million yuan to 1 billion yuan, mainly for mobile Internet companies.
