Software, IT revenue to double
SHANGHAI'S software and information technology industry revenue may double by 2015 as the central government increases its support to the city, officials said yesterday.
The Ministry of Industry and Information Technology will release "encouraging measures" and support construction of industrial zones in Shanghai, according to a memorandum of understanding signed with the Shanghai government yesterday. The MOU didn't elaborate on the measures.
Yang Xueshan, deputy minister of industry and information technology, said that he expected revenue from software and information service industries in Shanghai to reach 500 billion yuan in the next five years. He also said that five large software firms with market value exceeding 100 billion yuan will be built over the same period.
Official data showed that revenue from the software and information service industries doubled to 253.2 billion yuan (US$39.6 billion) in Shanghai from 122.1 billion yuan in 2006.
Shanghai is among the first batch of five cities chosen to pilot the development of the software and IT industries. The other cities are Beijing, Nanjing, Chengdu and Jinan.
This year is expected to see listings of 13 IT companies, most of which have been certified by the central or Shanghai governments.
