Software and Internet drive Shanghai IT
SOFTWARE and the Internet have become dual engines powering Shanghai’s information technology industry whose revenue surged 18 percent in the first half of this year, government officials said yesterday.
In the January-June period, Shanghai’s IT service revenue rose to 280 billion yuan (US$45 billion), the Shanghai Commission of Economy and Information Technology Development, the local regulator, said yesterday.
“Internet Plus and integration with traditional industries are expected to become engines of Shanghai’s IT industry,” said Fu Xinhua, vice head of the commission.
In the first quarter, the local software industry contributed 80.8 billion yuan, up 18.2 percent year on year. The Internet industry contributed 28.7 billion yuan, up 30.6 percent, according to the commission.
On Sunday, China unveiled an Internet Plus plan to integrate the Internet with traditional industries and fuel economic growth. The Internet Plus sectors, including online finance, cyber entertainment, online education and health care, are playing important roles in the daily life of the city as well as boosting economic development.
Shanghai accounted for 60 percent of all third-party payment transactions.
Up to June 22, a total of 139 local firms drew investment in the dot-com sector for the city to rank second behind Beijing. Most of the funds were for the local O2O (online-to-offline) business and Internet finance, according to the commission.
The Shanghai city government has also signed pacts with Alibaba and Tencent to develop further Internet Plus and create online applications for use in urban management.
