'Software city' to raise revenue
SHANGHAI, which was named China's "Famous Software City" yesterday, is planning to double its software and information service industry revenue in 2015, government officials said.
Last year, software and information revenue reached 362.8 billion yuan (US$58.8 billion), a year-on-year growth of 18 percent.
In this year's first quarter, revenue reached 97.6 billion yuan, also up 18 percent.
In 2015, revenue will hit 600 billion yuan and is expected to hit 1 trillion yuan in 2020, according to Shanghai's Commission of Economy and Information Technology.
"The software and information service industry is not only a new-technology industry in Shanghai, but a pillar industry," Li Yaoxin, director of the commission, said yesterday.
The city was given the software city title at a Ministry of Industry and Information Technology ceremony also attended by Yang Xueshan, MIIT's vice minister and Zhou Bo, Shanghai's vice mayor.
Through the award, Shanghai will be able to develop globally competitive enterprises and establish more industrial parks, ministry officials said.
At present, Shanghai has 24 software firms with annual income of over 1 billion yuan.
The city's new Lingang Software park in Fengxian District also opened yesterday as part of the city's strategy to establish 2 million square meters of IT industrial parks, Li said.
He also said Shanghai would continue to develop new technologies to boost the IT industry in the city in areas such as cloud computing, mobile Internet and big data analysis.
