Sohu posts mixed Q3 performance

NET income at Sohu, an online game and search engine operator, plunged in the third quarter although it posted surprisingly better revenue.

Net profit in the three months ended September tumbled 47 percent annually to US$24 million after marketing expenses and headcount costs, including salaries and incentive expenses, climbed, the firm said in a stock exchange filing yesterday.

Sohu posted a US$285-million revenue on rising online gaming income while operating expenses soared 36 percent in the third quarter. Its online gaming unit Changyou reported a 30-percent annual rise in income to US$151 million.

Sohu sees revenue in the fourth quarter to rise 23.8 to 25.8 percent annually to US$288 million to US$293 million.

Revenue at its search unit Sogou more than doubled to US$37 million in the quarter.

In the period, Sogou has 3.1 percent of China's search market, with Baidu at 78.6 percent, Analysys International said.
