Sony eyes to sell game consoles via FTZ
Sony Corp plans to sell game consoles on the Chinese mainland, one of its three top regional markets, through the new free trade zone in Shanghai.
Sony plans to expand business in China under the One Sony strategy, which connects its TV, mobile phone, music and film businesses, Kazuo Hirai, Sony’s chief executive, said yesterday in Shanghai.
“Under the One Sony strategy, we will continue exploring new opportunities and innovation and boost business in both entertainment and electronics,” Hirai said.
Sony, which is developing PlayStation 4, is evaluating and researching possibilities to expand the game business in China, according to Hirai. Although Sony’s PlayStation devices are popular in the market, they are not officially available on the mainland.
Foreign firms are not allowed to sell game consoles in the domestic market.
Sony has eight directly-owned stores and a mobile phone and TV business on the mainland.
Microsoft Corp has a cooperation deal with Shanghai-based BesTV on Xbox production and sales in the FTZ.
