Sony goes 4K with its TV models in China
MORE than half of Sony television sets sold in China this year will feature ultra-high resolution, or 4K, technology, the Japan-based electronics giant said yesterday as the company seeks to woo high-end consumers and boost its revenue in China.
UHD represents super high image quality in the TV market, covering 8K and 4K technology which is a generic term for display devices having horizontal resolution of the order of 4,000 pixels, compared with the traditional 2,000 pixels.
Globally, the 4K TV penetration rate will hit 8.1 percent by the end of 2014 compared with 1 percent last year, which means the market is becoming mature, according to TrendForce, a Taiwan-based research firm.
Sony has launched nine new 4K models, ranging from 49 inches to 85 inches. Meanwhile, the company is also cooperating with organizers of this year’s soccer World Cup in Brazil to broadcast the world’s most popular sporting event in 4K standard.
Sales figures for UHD TV, now offered by giants like South Korea’s Samsung Electronics and Sony and providing four times or higher image quality compared with current TVs, will hit 8 million units in China in 2014, as opposed to just 600,000 last year, according to data collated by GFK, a Germany-based market researcher.
