Sony to start game console packaging in Shanghai FTZ by December
SONY plans to start packaging new video game consoles in China and begin selling the PlayStation 4 as early as in December, according to a construction project filing on the official website of China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone.
Sony follows the move of Microsoft Corp, which is already selling its Xbox One in China after the country lifted the restriction on sales of gaming machines earlier this year.
The Xbox One was launched in the Shanghai FTZ at the end of September and it's the first game console legally available in China since 2000.
The environmental protection assessment report of Sony shows the PS4 packaging facility cost about 1 million yuan, covering an area of 500 square meters.
Sony will start examine and pack the PlayStation 4 gaming console in December this year, with an annual capacity of 200,000 sets. A total of 20 staff will be working on the project.
In May this year, Sony set up a joint venture with Shanghai-based Oriental Pearl Culture Development Co to introduce its PlayStation gaming consoles.
