Talks to launch iPhone and iPad domestically
CHINA Unicom and Apple Inc are talking about introducing the iPhone 4 and iPad in the domestic market and the Chinese telco is expected to launch the next version of the iPhone as early as September, media reported yesterday.
The telco will test the iPhone 4, released on June 7 in the United States, next month and it is expected to unveil it on the Chinese mainland "as early as" September, according to media reports which cited China Unicom's Vice President Li Gang.
Apple declined to make comment on the issue yesterday.
China Unicom is now selling the iPhone 3GS, an older version, on the mainland. Offering the new iPhone 4 will help China Unicom to challenge China Mobile's leading position in the high-end smartphone market, analysts said.
Compared with the older iPhone 3G or 3GS, the iPhone 4 features a new design, built-in camera with flash and video call function.
The telco is also exploring with Apple on introducing the popular iPad, a tablet computer, Li added.
Apple said it sold 3 million iPads within just 80 days of its launch.
By the end of May, the telco had 6.53 million 3G users, behind market leader China Mobile's 9.32 million 3G subscribers, according to data from the companies.
