Taobao removes millions of fraud products in H1

MORE than 47.6 million fraud products were pulled off the shelf from Taobao Marketplace, the country's largest consumer-to-consumer shopping site, in the first half of this year as the website stepped up effort to combat fake commodities.

About 2.3 million items, or less than 5 percent of the fraud items, were removed after Taobao received reports from brand vendors. The rest were taken down through Taobao's daily inspections, the e-commerce company said today.

Last year, Taobao, the unit of e-commerce group Alibaba, was among a list of "notorious markets" released by the Office of the United States Trade Representative. The list identifies a series of markets for supporting or selling pirated and counterfeit goods. Beijing's Silk Street Market and Shenzhen's Lo Wu Commercial Center were also on the list.

Taobao said it now has a team of 2,000 staff members to handle customer complaints and identify and remove pirated products from its site. Taobao is working closely with more than 18,000 brand vendors or authorized retailers to combat against false goods.
