Taobao teams with Wasu to offer TV shopping
TAOBAO.COM today launched a joint venture with Zhejiang-based digital TV network operator Wasu Online to expand e-commerce to TV watchers.
Both sides will invest 100 million yuan (US$14.6 million) in the new company, Wasu Taobao Digital Technology Co, and will operate a TV shopping platform that combines Taobao's online shopping resources.
Digital TV users in Hangzhou will be able to choose from over 3,000 kinds of products from the digital platform starting yesterday. Transaction and payment procedure will be completed on the interactive platform of Wasu TV with the products coming from the C2C platform Taobao. The service will be gradually expanded to customers around the country.
"It's a good opportunity for Taobao and Wasu to take as the State Council has just announced the plan to converge broadcasting, telecommunication networks and Internet," said Ma Yun, chairman and CEO of Alibaba Group.
It also launched a new Website for online video and TV series. Taohua.com will offer over 4,000 movies and 20,000 episodes of TV series for users on their request and around 90 percent of them will be free of charge.
"The cooperation of the two sides has combined each others' advantage in terms of content and platform and will be able to cover tens of millions of TV watchers that are potential online shoppers," Chairman of Wasu Group Fang Jiansheng said.
"The new company with Wasu means a broader customer base through the broadcasting network and it may step up more efforts in the future to grab mobile Internet users, PC users as well as TV watchers," said Chen Shousong, an analyst with Beijing-based consultancy Analysys International
Wasu now runs an IPTV network in more than 120 cities around the country and has a user base of around 12 million.
