Taobao's Etao to boost online search

CHINA'S largest e-commerce platform, Taobao, has launched a search engine called Etao that is targeted at online shoppers.

The search engine provides search results for product listings on Taobao as well as reviews of consumer electronics on other websites in cooperation with Microsoft's Bing search engine.

Users can also see realtime Taobao transaction information on the sidebar according to keywords searched on the website.

"The new website is operated by the search engine team under Taobao.com and we chose to partner with Bing because it's suitable for our business," said Wang Shuai, senior vice president of Alibaba Group.

The group has signed a framework agreement in August to pay US$15 million for 10 percent in Sohu's search engine, Sogou.

Yunfeng Fund L.P, a private equity backed by Alibaba Chairman Jack Ma will also hold 6 percent by paying US$9 million.

"This (Etao) is a business choice, just like our strategic partnership with Sogou," Wang added.
