Tapping new domain names
CHINESE companies should be ready to tap opportunities from the next round of new top-level Internet domain names, such as .game and .app, by enhancing brand awareness and boosting competitiveness globally, industry officials said yesterday.
The next round of generic top-level domain names is scheduled to open within 24 months but companies should start preparing now for the complicated verification and application process, said Chiao Ching, founder and chief executive of Brandma.com, a Beijing-based domain asset management firm, whose clients include some top-100 brands in China.
“It opens a new era of Internet domain names and brand management (for Chinese firms) after the .com era dominated by overseas firms,” Chiao said.
Chinese firms, especially in rapidly growing sectors like mobile Internet and game, require a top-level domain name online to build up their brands and help them expand globally.
The new domain names available for application also include those for cities, like .berlin and .london, and Chinese-language domain names, according to Roland Laplante, senior vice president of Ireland-based Afilias.
