Tech firms eye game market

HIGH-TECH firms including chip makers, smartphone vendors and data analysis firms, are seeking game-related market opportunities in China.
At the ChinaJoy show in Shanghai, firms like Intel and Yahoo are showcasing the latest technologies to offer users better game experiences.
More than 550 computers featuring Intel’s latest chips are in the booths of firms like Blizzard, Tencent and Shanda. It boasts the latest CPU and graphic chips supporting features like gesture control, voice recognition and 3D display, according to Intel, the world’s largest semiconductor chip maker.
“It’s not a file for a single player in the rapidly growing and changing industry in China. It requires industry collaboration and latest technologies,” said Hong Li, director of Intel’s PC and Internet of Things divisions.
China’s revenue from the gaming industry in the first half rose 22 percent year on year to 60.5 billion yuan (US$9.74 billion). The mobile game, the industry’s fastest growing sector, jumped 67 percent.
Intel signed a deal with Giant on 3D mobile game technology. Shanghai-based Shanda plans to kick off a 3D-featured mobile game transferred from its popular PC game Zhengtu.
Yahoo, which attended ChinaJoy as an exhibitor for the first time, displayed its mobile suite Flurry, which helps application developers market, publish and analyze mobile game distribution.
Yahoo, which doesn’t have consumer-oriented business on the Chinese mainland, was optimistic about the market opportunities for overseas distribution of domestic mobile game developers.
Smartphone vendors were also actively involved with game firms to improve brand awareness among game fans.
