Tech giants to support Windows upgrades
MICROSOFT will allow Chinese users to upgrade to its latest Windows 10 operating system through local tech firms Tencent, Qihoo 360, Baidu and Lenovo.
The partnership is an unprecedented effort by the American company to secure more users in the world’s largest PC and mobile device market.
China has been slow to adopt newer versions of Windows. Data from StatCounter showed that as of last month, Windows 7 accounted for 58 percent of all desktop and tablet operating systems in China, followed by Windows XP at 25.5 percent and Windows 8 with 6.8 percent.
Microsoft hopes Tencent and Qihoo can help promote the new operating system, while PC maker Lenovo will also offer update services at its service stations around the country.
Windows 10 features a desktop version of its intelligent personal assistant Cortana and the new Edge browser.
