Tech helps boost food security

THE latest radio technologies have been adopted to improve food security in the industry chain in Shanghai, Shanghai Daily learned yesterday.

Consumers can check the quality and safety of made-in-Shanghai food products through mobile phone applications and machines in supermarkets, industry officials said at the two-day Internet of Things China 2012 Conference and Exhibition, which opened in Shanghai yesterday.

The Internet of Things refers to wireless connections among various devices such as cars, home appliances, mobile phones and electronic tags.

"The Internet of Things is our new weapon to better regulate the (food) industry chain," said Zhang Cheng, project manager of the Shanghai Agriculture Information Co, at the event held at the Shanghai World Expo Conference and Exhibition Center in Pudong New Area.

It has also set up a website and special machines in supermarkets to allow users to check the production date and information about food security inspection by embedding electronic tags or bar codes on products.
