Telco rings up more than 25m new 3G subscribers
CHINA Unicom has gained more than 25 million new users in 2011 by expanding its presence in the high-end and entry-level phone markets, and this helped the telco meet its expectations for the year, it said yesterday.
The country's second biggest mobile carrier has added more new 3G subscribers in the past two months and is catching up with bigger rival China Mobile in the number of 3G users, industry insiders said.
In November, the latest month for which figures are available, China Unicom added 3.38 million new 3G users, compared with China Mobile's 2.68 million and China Telecom's 2.16 million. By the end of November, the telco boasted 36.53 million 3G users, or an increase of about 25 million new users since the start of 2011, according to China Unicom.
"We have met the 2011 target because we expanded in both high-end and entry-level sectors," said China Unicom in a statement.
In the market for entry-level phones, China Unicom has cooperated with domestic companies including Lenovo, ZTE and Huawei to launch Android smartphones costing about 1,000 yuan (US$159).
China Unicom, whose 3G network covers 355 cities nationwide, plans to invest heavily in the faster 3G technology called HSDPA+ (high-speed downlink packet access).
