Telcos invest in big data for new income
CHINESE telecommunications carriers, which have seen their traditional voice and message business decline, are investing heavily in big data technology to generate new income, they said yesterday at the Shanghai Telecommunications Development Forum.
"The big data technology provides an unique opportunity for telecommunications carriers to transform their business and create new opportunities for them," said Chen Jiezhong, director of the Shanghai Communications Administration.
China Unicom has invested 40 million yuan (US$6.5 million) on big data. China Mobile and China Telecom, the country's biggest fixed-line operator, also planned to invest in big data technology to improve services like 4G network coverage and IPTV (Internet Protocol TV) in Shanghai.
