Telecom providers join forces on broadband

CHINA Unicom and China Telecom said yesterday that they will work together to provide their users with better broadband services and standardized set-top boxes.
The move is likely an effort to better compete with market leader China Mobile, which has been steadily expanding into the broadband sector from mobile communications, unnamed analysts said.
The two companies said in a statement that they “plan to offer users an improved broadband service standard” and “a unified technology standard for set-top boxes, covering super high-definition image quality and better sound.”
Earlier this month, the government approved China Broadcasting Network as the nation’s fourth telecommunications carrier in a bid to boost competition and stimulate technology upgrades.
At present, more than 90 percent of the country’s 200 million broadband users subscribe to China Mobile, China Unicom or China Telecom.
