Tencent lock horns with Qihoo360 in court
THE Guangdong Province Higher People's Court today held a hearing on one of China's most watched cases between two Internet giants, Tencent and Qihoo360.
Tencent, China's largest Internet company in terms of market value, is suing Qihoo360 for damaging the brand and reputation of its Internet chatting tool QQ and also hurting its income. Tencent is asking for 125 million yuan (US$19.8 million) in damages from Qihoo.
Qihoo360, the free anti-virus tool provider, is accused of misleading users with a computer security software it launched called "Koukou Guard" and claiming QQ is scanning users' private data and information.
Tencent said the security software disabled and uninstall dozens of value-added services that come with QQ, thus hurting its business income.
Qihoo360 lawyers argued in the court that users have the right to delete value-added plug-ins and its Koukou Guard is good for users and for market competition.
Early this year, the court also heard Qihoo360's appeal against Tencent for abusing its market monopoly to force users to install anti-virus tools developed by QQ. The court did not make a ruling.
