Tencent sets up film production department
TENCENT has set up a film production department under its interactive entertainment unit to turn the intellectual property owned by its online gaming unit into film or video products.
Tencent chief operating officer Ren Yuxin said the company hopes to leverage its digital content and to better connect users through offering derivative produces of online games, online literature and cartoon.
Domestic Internet companies are no longer satisfied with merely offering screening channels for videos and films and they’ve been expanding their businesses into film production. E-commerce giant Alibaba, domestic online video sites iQiyi and LeTV have similar projects to offer self-made video content to lure viewers.
Tencent plans to develop derivatives from four to five online gaming projects. It also unveiled a young director training program in collaboration with China Film Association.
The first batch of works will include a number of hit online games and hot cartoon works aired on Tencent’s online video platform.
