Tencent’s WeChat to launch “We City” project in Tianjin
THE first demonstration zone for smart cities using Tencent WeChat's business solutions is expected to be launched by the end of this year in Heping District in Tianjin, as public services providers and retailers are also trying to catch up with the shift toward smartphones.
The "We City" demonstration project in Tianjin will allow residents to search for community services, employment information, education information and civil administration facilities through one-stop WeChat public accounts.
Currently, WeChat has allowed a variety of companies to leverage its online payment capabilities such as hotel booking, airline tickets buying, e-commerce and public utility payment.
Tencent, like other Internet giants such as Alibaba and Baidu, is trying to build its own Internet ecosystem that combines, information searching, online shopping and even online banking.
It's also working with local department stores, restaurants and courier companies so that consumers can more easily access their service.
