Tencent’s facial recognition unit to open technologies to partners

TENCENT'S facial recognition research team "Best-Image" said it will strengthen collaboration with public service providers and government agencies and open its key technologies to external partners.

"We will gradually open our key technology capabilities to third party application developers and software providers free of charge so they can have access to cutting-edge technology without paying for them," said Gary Huang, director of Best Image research center.

Tencent's facial recognition and detection technology has already been used at Tencent's online banking arm WeBank for users to open their accounts remotely and pass the identification verification process.

In the future, the unit is expected to form partnerships with local police authorities and government agencies to allow easier and more efficient verification of identity.

Huang said his team will also work with police authorities in Nanjing and a number of other cities and provide them with technology support for online identity verification process for applicants of driving licenses or ID cards.

The technology will also be used for police affairs, such as helping them identify missing children, and for verification at office building entrances.
