Tudou targets the young
YOUKU Tudou yesterday launched a new channel targeting younger viewers to consolidate its hold in the fiercely competitive online video market.
The newly launched Tudou Original will mainly target young users with comics, music, fashion and South Korean entertainment contents and self-produced programs, said Yang Weidong, Tudou’s president.
“Young people have their own taste and preferences,” Yang said. “We hope to win their loyalty (on the brand) and grow.”
In 2012, Youku merged with Tudou to establish the No. 1 online video group in China but Tudou has kept its independent brand.
In the second quarter of this year, Chinese online video sites raked in advertising income of 4.1 billion yuan (US$670 million), up 42.6 percent year on year. Youku Tudou had a 24 percent market share, followed by IQiyi and Sohu Video, said Analysys International, a Beijing-based IT consulting firm.
IQiyi said earlier this week that it will produce 500 programs in 2015. Tudou has invested heavily to purchase contents from South Korean publishers like KBS and SBS.
