Twitter CEO in city today on 鈥榩ersonal trip鈥
TWITTER Inc Chief Executive Officer Dick Costolo visits Shanghai today as part of a "personal trip" in which he will meet with Shanghai government officials, academics and students during his first visit to China.
Twitter is not available in China, which has more than 600 million Internet users, though it's one of the world’s top social tools.
Costolo is scheduled to meet Shanghai government officials, including representatives of the Shanghai Pilot Free Trade Zone, to ask about market liberalization measures, such as looser rules governing currency conversion and foreign direct investment. He will also meet university administrators and students at Fudan University, Reuters reported.
"He will come (to Fudan in Shanghai), but it's totally a personal trip," a Fudan official told Shanghai Daily today.
That echoed a Twitter statement saying the CEO is coming to China because "he wants to learn more about Chinese culture and the country's thriving technology sector."
A rumor saying that Facebook and Twitter would be available in the Shanghai FTZ was denied by government officials.
Twitter, which has 250 million monthly users around the world, does have users in China though officially blocked and some tweets are written in Chinese.
Chinese Twitter-like service Sina Weibo announced during the weekend it will issue an initial public offering in the United States for US$500 million.
