US security checks and protectionism harm consumers
HUAWEI Technologies, China's top telecommunications equipment firm, said yesterday that US security checks and trade protection, which curbed its business there, finally harmed consumers because of high telecom cost.
Huawei's chief financial officer Cathy Meng said Americans pay about twice what Europeans do for advanced mobile phone services, implying it comes from lack of competition.
"These measures using trade protectionism to interfere with free competition will ultimately harm the benefits of end users and consumers," Meng said in Beijing.
In October, a US congressional panel recommended phone carriers avoid doing business with telecom gear makers Huawei and ZTE Corp.
