Unicom prepares for different 4G tech

China Unicom is building and testing 4G technology in Shanghai although it hasn’t got a license for 4G FD-LTE services yet, the country’s No. 2 mobile carrier said yesterday.

Its 4G network supports download speeds of 150 megabytes per second, 10 to 20 times faster than the 3G network, according to a test the telco did in the World Expo region in Pudong New Area using a Samsung Galaxy S4 which supports FD-LTE technology.

China issued 4G licenses to all three telecom operators earlier this month based on the home-grown TD-LTE technology which China Mobile has adopted. It will soon issue 4G FD-LTE licenses to China Unicom and China Telecom, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said.

For commercial and technical reasons, it’s more practical and profitable for China Unicom to adopt the 4G FD-LTE technology.
