Unicom's profit rises 89% on 3G

CHINA Unicom's net profit surged 89 percent in the first quarter as the 3G business boomed, the country's No. 2 telco said yesterday.

Its net profit totaled 1.9 billion yuan (US$308 million) in the first three months, up from 1 billion yuan a year ago. Revenue was 70.6 billion yuan, an annual growth of 15.4 percent. The 3G business contributed 55 percent of China Unicom's total mobile income of 19 billion yuan by the end of the quarter, up from 43 percent in the same period a year ago.

By the end of the first quarter, Unicom's 87.8 million 3G subscribers still lagged behind the 114.4 million for market leader China Mobile.

China Unicom operates the 3G network based on WCDMA (wideband code division multiple access), the most commercially mature 3G technology among the three telcos in China.

Though China Mobile's first-quarter profit growth was a weak 0.3 percent year on year, its net earnings of 27.9 billion yuan was still over 10 times that of China Unicom.

China Telecom, the country's third-biggest telco, is set to report results today.
