Upgrade lets iPhone users block spam calls

CHINESE iPhone users can block spam calls for the first time after they upgrade to Apple’s new iOS operating system in the fall, which also helps developers offer consumers better services.
The new Apple iOS 10, released during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference held in the United States, enables new features and services like Siri to be accessible to third-party developers, which may help the company boost sales in China, its second-biggest regional market.
Chinese firms, including Tencent, Meituan Dianping and Didi Chuxing, have developed and tested new features suitable for iOS 10.
Apple demonstrated Tencent Security’s spam information feature in the new iOS 10, which is expected to block spam calls from real estate agents, education service promoters and those committing finance fraud crimes.
More than 438 million Chinese experienced spam calls or received spam messages in 2015, which led to an economic loss of 22.2 billion yuan (US$3.4 billion) nationwide, said Tencent which has over 800 million users in China.
Apple’s other major move was to open Siri to developers, allowing third-party apps to tap Apple’s voice assistant, with supporting languages including English and Mandarin. Chinese ride-hailing app Didi Chuxing and messaging app WeChat are among the apps available.
With the new iOS 10, Meituan Dianping allows users to book a table directly in iPhone’s map service.
