Users of tablets globally to exceed 1b
CHINA is expected to be the biggest tablet computer market this year even as the number of users globally grows by a slower pace to surpass 1 billion for the first time, according to research firms yesterday.
China is set to boast 328 million tablet users this year, up from 281 million last year. The figure is more than double the number of users in the United States, which ranked No. 2, a report from research firm eMarketer said.
Globally, the number of tablet users will rise to 1.06 billion this year, up 17.1 percent year on year, slowing from 29.1 percent jump in 2014, eMarketer said.
Ranjit Atwal, research director at Gartner, attributed the slower growth to several factors.
“One is that the lifetime of tablets is being extended — they are shared amongst family members while software upgrades, especially for iOS devices, keep the tablets current,” he said.
“Another factor is the lack of innovation in hardware which refrains consumers from upgrading.”
Tablets are also facing greater competition from big-screen smartphones and other connected devices, industry insiders said.
Gartner predicted global tablet computer sales of 233 million units in 2015, up 8 percent compared with “double-digits” in the past two years.
