Vancl told to withdraw T-shirts with Premier Wen's image
Online clothing retailer Vancl is good at making creative, eye-catching ads but it had a pratfall recently for using Premier Wen Jiabao's image in a T-shirt promotion.
Vancl, China's largest online apparel retailer by sales, has been forced to delete the ad with Wen's photos and quotes from its website and stop selling T-shirts printed with
Wen's quotes, Xinhua News Agency reported yesterday.
Vancl has violated the Chinese law that prohibits quoting national leaders in commercial promotions. The market regulator will "take action against" Beijing-based Vancl, Xinhua said, citing the Beijing Administration for Industry and Commerce.
Vancl declined to comment on the issue yesterday.
T-shirts sporting Wen's quotes, "Look up at the starry sky and keep feet on the ground" and "Forget me" have been removed from Vancl's online store. They cost 59 yuan (US$9.4) each early this month.
"Look up at the Starry Sky" is taken from Wen's poem published in People's Daily, while "Forget me" is quoted from Wen's remarks during a televised press conference last month. These words are widely known in China.
Vancl has tried its best to "recall" T-shirts already sold to customers, Shanghai Daily learned.
