Videos via more devices

CHINA Telecom yesterday established a new video content company in Shanghai for mobile phone and broadband users as it moves to turn itself into a provider of information services.

The new firm, Tian Yi Shi Xun, located in Pudong Jinqiao Industry Park, will offer video services to China Telecom's users through various devices ranging from mobile phones, handheld devices to TVs.

"The firm is the latest move for us to transform from a traditional telecommunications service provider to an information service provider," Zhang Weihua, general manager of the telco's Shanghai branch, said yesterday.

The telco's current video services, which can only be accessed through mobile phones, have so far attracted 15 million handset users who can access 69,000 programs in 114 channels, according to Zhang.

China Telecom is cooperating with several industry partners, including Lenovo Group Ltd, ZTE Corp and Shanghai Media Group's BesTV, to offer video content to its new company.

The set-up also marked the telco's latest move to expand into the Three Network Convergence, a national policy which refers to the convergence of telecom, Internet and TV networks.
