Web users see social media as positive

The popularity of social media has been positive for about 77 percent of web users despite worries over privacy and less reading time, a study showed yesterday.

The respondents said social media’s impact is positive and only 6.7 percent said it has made their lives worse, with the rest suggesting the impact is neutral, consumer research firm Kantar China said in its Social Media Impact Report.

The online polling covers 12,221 participants.

The social media’s major benefits include “adjusting mood and relieving pressure” and “making my life more efficient and convenient.”

People are using social media as a tool to share happiness by posting photos of nice food and beautiful scenes, said Sophie Shen, general manager of CTR Media & Consumption Behaviour, Kantar’s joint venture with China International Television Corp.

But people are likely to start paying attention to privacy and the negative influence of social media, Shen said.

More than half of the respondents blamed social media sites for reducing their time on reading books while 39 percent feared lack of privacy.
