Weekend bonanza awaits mobile users

MOBILE phone users can look forward to more choices and discounts with new packages following the regulators’ decision last week to give state-owned telecommunication carriers more freedom to set prices and packages, Shanghai Daily learned yesterday.

China Unicom, the country’s No. 2 mobile carrier, will offer customized packages with low entry level and discounted data packages online, starting from Saturday, which is World Telecommunications Day when carriers often kick off new services and unveil new policies.

For example, it will offer packages starting from 8 yuan (US$1.28) a month, less than half of its lowest entry level package now. It will also provide a six-month, 1-gigabyte data service package for 10 yuan, 10 percent of the current price, the company said yesterday.

“It will be a festival for consumers with bigger discounts and more choices,” China Unicom said in a statement yesterday.

China Mobile, the country’s No. 1 mobile carrier with more than 700 million users, also aims to cut the price of its 4G services, media reported.

China Mobile declined to comment yesterday but confirmed that the company will hold an event to announce new policies on Saturday.

Market forces will determine pricing but the telcos are barred from giving excessive discounts or placing misleading advertisements, the regulators — the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology and the National Development and Reform Commission — said in a joint statement last week.

The freedom to set prices applies to general telecom services, voice services, text messages, and broadband, the statement said.
