Weibo commits to reducing spam, marketing links

Sina's microblogging site Weibo said it will enhance the quality of each user's timeline by eliminating useless comments and spam links.

The company said it is going to use a machine identification system and human efforts to remove disturbing posts, marketing links and spam messages.

An average of 100 million posts are made every day on Weibo.

In the next few months, it will also introduce a new mechanism to automatically remove tweets posted by third-party software or posts that are purely for advertising purposes.

For example, similar posts repeated within a very short period of time by the same account will be labeled as low-quality content and will be removed from a user's timeline.

Earlier this month, Weibo started encouraging users to report spam links. Employees review the links to determine whether they should be removed.
