Weibo plans to launch more games for mobile devices
SINA'S microblogging site Weibo said it plans to launch at least 10 new games by the end of this year as it seeks new revenue streams after its initial public offering earlier this year.
Online advertising income contributed most of Weibo's revenue in the first quarter this year due to its collaboration with e-commerce giant Alibaba.
Weibo also hopes to get users to use their smartphones and mobile devices more frequently to catch up with Tencent and Alibaba.
Baidu, Qihoo360 and a number of Internet companies have launched mobile gaming platforms, which drive income on smartphones.
Weibo will also launch an open platform for external game developers.
This year, China's mobile gaming market is expected to jump 59 percent to 23.6 billion yuan (US$3.8 billion) and the number of mobile game players on smart devices is estimated to reach 300 million, according to Internet consultancy iResearch Inc.
Weibo's payment service is set to open to third party game developers and business owners to bring them closer with Weibo users.
