Widespread use of 3G on mainland

MORE than 70 percent of new mobile phone owners were 3G users in Chinese mainland in the first five months due to the popularity of 3G in the country, the industry regulator said yesterday.

There were 166.67 million 3G users in the mainland by the end of May, an increase of 38.3 million in five months. This represented a penetration rate of 16 percent. The rate may rise to 20 percent by the third quarter, the Ministry of Industry and Information Industry said.

"The 3G penetration will accelerate when it reaches 15 percent in a region, according to the experience of telecommunication industry in overseas markets," Wang Xiaochu, China Telecom's chairman, said at a recent conference.

The overseas markets like South Korea, Japan and the US have a 50 percent penetration rate for 3G and so the mainland has a great potential for 3G to grow, according to analysts.

The falling prices of 3G phones have also fueled the popularity of 3G, which provides a higher Internet speed access for mobile users, observers said.

The mainland's total mobile users added 54.5 million to 1.04 billion to be the world's No. 1.
