Windows Phone 8 gets a boost
MICROSOFT Corp has tied up with several phone makers to unveil latest smartphones running Windows Phone 8 in China, industry officials said yesterday.
The tie-ups will help Microsoft's new system to become the third competitive operating system for smartphones after Google's Android and Apple's iOS, they said.
Microsoft yesterday joined Taiwan-based HTC to unveil the Windows Phone 8X and Windows Phone 8S in Beijing.
HTC said it will unveil new Windows phones supporting the networks of China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom, said Ray Yam, HTC China's president.
Samsung and ZTE will also introduce new Windows phones by the end of this year in China.
As the world's biggest smartphone market, the debut of the models is expected to help Microsoft gain 11.4 percent of the world's smartphone market by 2015, behind Android's 63.8 percent and iOS' 19.1 percent, US-based International Data Corp said.
"Windows Phone will battle with BlackBerry for the No. 3 spot in 2013, but will gain strength in the years ahead," IDC said in a statement yesterday.
"Windows Phone will build on the progress it made in 2012," IDC said.
